What is a Wake County base school?
A base school is the WCPSS community school assigned to a student because of where the student lives. It is the starting point for enrollment.
For the 2026–27 school year, WCPSS says families enroll by finding the base school, completing online enrollment, providing required enrollment materials and submitting immunization/health-assessment records. WCPSS, Base Schools
The base school is not the same thing as a magnet, early college, calendar-choice or transfer placement. If a buyer wants a non-base school, the family may need a separate application process and approval is not guaranteed.
How do I check the assigned schools for a house?
Use this process before relying on any marketing material:
- Confirm the exact street address. A nearby house can fall in a different attendance area.

- Open the WCPSS assignment lookup. Enter the residential address.
- Choose the school year you care about. Current and future-year options can differ.
- Record elementary, middle and high assignments. Do not save only the high school.
- Check the calendar. Traditional and year-round options can affect the household schedule.
- Check caps. A base school can be capped even though it appears in the lookup.
- Review current enrollment-plan proposals. Proposed reassignment can matter for a future move-in year.

What is a capped school?

The cap page also uses residency dates and documentation rules. WCPSS says families enrolling at capped schools must be living in the home and provide evidence of current residency; an offer to purchase a home or a future-dated lease does not by itself satisfy those residency requirements.
That distinction matters during a real estate purchase. A contract on a property and completed enrollment are not the same event.
Which Wake County schools are capped right now?
The list changes, so the live district page should control. As of September 7, 2026, WCPSS’s published list includes schools such as Abbotts Creek Elementary, Apex Friendship Elementary, Apex Friendship Middle, Cedar Fork Elementary, Holly Ridge Elementary, Mills Park Middle under a feeder-pattern cap, Northwoods Elementary, Oakview Elementary, Panther Creek High and others. What is the difference between base, magnet, year-round and transfer choices?
A simple way to separate them is:

For a relocating family, check the assigned school’s actual calendar before assuming the family schedule. If siblings would attend multiple schools, calendar compatibility can be a practical factor even when the addresses and academics are otherwise a fit.
Can Wake County change a school assignment after I buy?
Yes. WCPSS uses an ongoing enrollment-planning process and can change attendance areas as schools open, growth shifts and capacity is managed.
A current example is the 2027–28 enrollment proposal. WCPSS says the initial draft includes base-school changes, calendar application changes and capacity adjustments, with a major focus on the opening of Morrisville High School. No seller, agent or website can promise that a public-school assignment will remain unchanged indefinitely.
What should I ask if a listing says “assigned to” a specific school?
Ask five follow-up questions:
- What exact address was checked?
- Which school year was selected?
- Was the source the official WCPSS lookup?
- Was cap status checked separately?
- Is the address affected by a proposed future enrollment plan?
A screenshot with a date is more useful than a school name copied from an old MLS record.
Should a real estate agent tell me which Wake County school is “best”?
An agent can help you verify factual assignment information, but buyers should evaluate educational preferences directly rather than asking an agent to steer them toward or away from neighborhoods based on school reputation or demographic proxies.
Useful agent support includes locating the official assignment page, confirming the parcel jurisdiction and flagging that an assignment needs rechecking. Educational evaluation belongs with the family, the school system and public education data.
