Apex
Apex kept a real main street while adding subdivisions at the pace of a much larger place. Living here means choosing which of those two Apexes you are buying into.
Apex has the one thing money cannot retrofit: a main street that was always a main street, with a depot at the end of it.
It also has some of the fastest subdivision growth in Wake County. Both things are true at once, and about a mile apart.
What is Apex like to live in?
It is a small historic town core surrounded by a large amount of new residential development. The centre — Salem Street, the Union Depot, the blocks either side — is walkable and genuinely old; almost everything beyond the Peakway ring road was built in the last thirty years.
The town's name comes from its position as the highest point on the old Chatham Railroad line between Richmond and Jacksonville, and the railway is still the organising fact of the centre. Salem Street runs parallel to it with the depot at one end.
That core is a few blocks deep. If walkability is the reason you are considering Apex, be specific about how close to Salem Street you need to be — the difference between eight minutes' walk and a four-minute drive is the difference between two entirely different lives here.
Side by side
Two Apexes
Almost every search here resolves into one of these, and mixing the criteria is what makes searches drag on.
A
The old town
Salem Street and the blocks around it
- Houses from roughly 1900 to the 1950s on small, walkable lots.
- You can walk to a restaurant, the depot and the park without crossing an arterial.
- Renovation is a constant. These are old houses with old systems.
- Limited supply and it rarely comes up. Patience is part of the strategy.
- Downtown Apex has real evening life for a town this size, which is unusual in Wake County.
B
The new town
South and west of the Peakway
- Post-1995 subdivisions, with the newest concentrated to the south.
- More house and more lot for the money than comparable Cary.
- Amenity-led — pools, trails, ball fields planned in from the start.
- You drive to everything, and school assignments here have shifted more than once with growth.
- Proximity to Jordan Lake and the American Tobacco Trail is a genuine draw for the outdoors-minded.
Placeholder image. FPOHow is the commute from Apex?
Good to Research Triangle Park via NC-540, and unremarkable to downtown Raleigh via US-64 and US-1. The variable that matters is whether your route uses the tolled section of 540, because the untolled alternatives through Cary are considerably slower at peak.
Apex sits at the junction of US-64 and NC-55, with the Peakway looping the old centre. Growth to the south and west has put real pressure on those corridors at school-run hours.
As anywhere in the Triangle, drive the route at the hour you would actually drive it. Apex is a town where two candidate houses can differ by fifteen minutes of commute for reasons that are invisible on a map.

Before you buy in Apex
- Is Apex cheaper than Cary?
- Generally yes for a comparable new house, and the gap narrows as you approach the Cary line. The saving usually comes with a longer drive to Research Triangle Park and a newer, less mature setting.
- What is the Peakway?
- A ring road looping the historic centre of Apex, built in sections over many years. It is the town's main circulation route and a useful mental boundary between the old centre and the newer subdivisions.
- How close is Jordan Lake?
- Immediately west of the town. It is a large Corps of Engineers reservoir with state recreation areas, boat access and trails, and it is the main reason Apex draws people who want water and forest access on a weekday evening rather than a weekend trip.
- Is downtown Apex actually walkable?
- The Salem Street blocks are, genuinely. The walkable area is small — a few blocks in each direction — so confirm the distance from a specific address rather than assuming that an Apex postcode means a walkable one.
Weighing Apex against Cary?
Usually the honest answer depends on one constraint you have not said out loud yet — commute, school, or the size of the garden. Start there.
