Why isn’t distance a good measure of a Cary-area commute?
Employment in western Wake County concentrates in a handful of destinations — Research Triangle Park, downtown Raleigh, RDU, and the office and lab campuses in Cary and Morrisville themselves — so traffic on I-40, NC-540, Wade Ave, and US-1 loads asymmetrically by direction and hour. These corridors fill up heading toward RTP and Raleigh in the morning and heading away from them in the evening; the reverse-peak direction on the same road at the same hour behaves differently. A short trip against the peak direction can be slower than a longer trip that runs with it. That asymmetry is real and well documented for Triangle commuting generally, but it cannot be reduced to a single minutes figure without a specific departure time, so this page reports what can be measured reliably — distance, route, and toll status — rather than a drive-time estimate.
Is the NC-540 toll worth paying?
Of the twelve routes below, four have a tolled NC-540 option with a signed untolled alternative. Measured by distance alone, the toll road is not the shorter drive on three of them. From West Cary, NC-540 to RTP is 9.9 miles against 8.4 miles on untolled Davis Dr, and NC-540 to RDU is 8.9 miles against 7.7 miles on untolled Aviation Pkwy — in both cases the toll route covers more ground, not less. From Apex, NC-540 to RTP is 17.3 miles against 13.0 miles on untolled Davis Dr, the largest gap of the four and again in the toll road’s disfavor by distance. The one pair where paying the toll also means driving fewer miles is Apex to RDU: NC-540 covers 16.3 miles against 18.1 miles on the untolled US-1/I-40 alternative, so there the toll buys both convenience and a shorter route. Anyone deciding whether NC-540 is worth it for a given trip should weigh that the toll frequently does not shorten the drive — it substitutes a limited-access road for a signalized one — and confirm the current toll schedule directly with the NC Turnpike Authority’s NC Quick Pass system, which does not accept cash.
What road handles each commute from Cary?
From Cary Town Hall, RTP is 11.2 miles via N Harrison Ave and I-40, downtown Raleigh is 12.1 miles via I-40 E, and RDU is 7.3 miles via N Harrison Ave. None of the three has a signed toll alternative from this starting point — NC-540 is not the shortest path for any of them from central Cary. I-40 carries the bulk of Triangle-wide through traffic in addition to local commuters, and its interchanges with NC-54, Harrison Avenue, and the I-440/US-1 split in Raleigh are recurring points of congestion regardless of the distance involved. What changes from West Cary, Morrisville, and Apex?
From the Green Hope High School area of West Cary, RTP is 9.9 miles via tolled NC-540 W (8.4 miles via untolled Davis Dr), downtown Raleigh is 20.3 miles via I-40 E and Wade Ave, and RDU is 8.9 miles via tolled NC-540 W (7.7 miles via untolled Aviation Pkwy) — the longest set of distances of the four origins, reflecting its position furthest west. From Morrisville Town Hall, RTP is 7.6 miles via Airport Blvd and I-40, downtown Raleigh is 14.0 miles via Wade Ave, and RDU is 4.2 miles via Aviation Pkwy — the shortest RDU distance of any origin, consistent with Morrisville’s own concentration of office and lab space near the airport. From Apex Town Hall, RTP is 17.3 miles via tolled NC-540 W (13.0 miles via untolled Davis Dr), downtown Raleigh is 15.1 miles via US-1 N and I-40 E, and RDU is 16.3 miles via tolled NC-540 W (18.1 miles via untolled US-1 N and I-40).

Each figure was measured once, on September 12, 2026, using Google Maps route distance between a fixed reference point in each town — Cary Town Hall, the Green Hope High School area of West Cary, Morrisville Town Hall, and Apex Town Hall — and a fixed destination point for RTP, downtown Raleigh (Raleigh City Hall), and RDU. A reliable drive-time figure requires setting a specific departure time and reflects that single moment, not a stable peak or off-peak average, which is why this page reports distance and route rather than minutes. A town-hall-to-landmark distance is also not the same as the distance from any particular street address to any particular office, so a reader comparing homes or job sites should measure their own address-to-address route rather than relying on these town-level figures.

Who should not rely on this table?
Anyone whose actual destination is a Cary or Morrisville employment site rather than RTP, downtown Raleigh, or RDU should not use this table at all — a local trip on Cary Parkway, Kildaire Farm Road, or NC-54 is not represented here. It also does not suit anyone trying to compare how long a commute takes at a specific hour, since these are distances and named routes, not drive times, and the honest answer to “how long will this take me at 8 a.m.” depends on a departure time this page cannot supply. And it does not substitute for checking current NCDOT construction notices and NC Quick Pass toll rates directly, since road conditions and toll schedules change and a distance that was accurate on the measurement date will still be accurate, but a toll rate or lane configuration may not be.
