If you are relocating to Research Triangle Park, choose where to live by the exact location of your office—not by the words “Raleigh,” “Durham” or “RTP” in the job posting. Why is “RTP” too broad to use as a commute destination?
Research Triangle Park is not a single office complex. The Park spans thousands of acres and includes employers, labs, campuses, hotels, restaurants and the mixed-use Hub RTP area. Two people who both say they work “in RTP” can have meaningfully different daily routes.
Before comparing homes, save these four locations:
- your employer’s exact building or campus entrance;
- your partner’s office, if applicable;

Is Morrisville always the closest place to RTP?
No. Morrisville is strategically located beside RTP and RDU, but “closest” depends on the employer address. A company on the Durham side of the Park may be easier to reach from south Durham. A company near NC 55 may fit west Cary or Morrisville especially well.
Morrisville is valuable to relocating workers because it lets them compare several major employment directions without committing to a long cross-region route. That does not mean every Morrisville home has the same commute.

Is Cary a good base for an RTP job?
Cary is one of the most flexible bases for RTP workers, but the town is too large to treat as one commute zone. West and northwest Cary are generally more naturally oriented toward RTP than some eastern Cary locations.

- an RTP job and a Raleigh job;
- RTP access and RDU airport access;

Can you commute to RTP without driving every day?
Some RTP commuters have transit options, but service depends heavily on origin and worksite. Start with a commute-and-life map before opening a listings portal. Put every recurring destination on one page, define your maximum acceptable travel pattern, then search only the parts of the Triangle that satisfy that system.

- budget and home type;
